With October being LGBT+ history month, I thought I’d write about some revolutionary trans women to know and look out for! These are just some of the people that are doing some great work in the trans community, with several organizations joining together each year to honor a list of 100 trans and gender non-conforming people.
- CeCe McDonald – CeCe spent a little over a year and a half in a men’s prison (despite being a trans woman) after an act of self defense left her attacker dead. She had been walking down the street with friends when she had become the recipient of some really violent transphobic and racist language from a group of bar patrons. That lead to a physical altercation, in which CeCe defended herself and her attacker died. She spoke with HuffPo recently about life and her activism since her release.
- Laverne Cox – The day I stop loving and appreciating Laverne is probably the day I die. She’s an actress (playing Sophia Burset on Orange is the New Black among other roles), a producer (including for a documentary about CeCe!), and an advocate.
- Janet Mock – Janet Mock is another one of those people I would continue to love and appreciate until death. She’s a writer (including an incredibly vulnerable and amazing memoir titled Redefining Realness), a talk show host, and speaker.
- Jennicet Gutiérrez – I’ve written about Jennicet before but back in June, Jennicet challenged President Obama during a speech at the White House about his high rates and policies of deportation.
