As many probably already know, there were several attacks in central Paris that left many dead. The good news is that social media responded to the Paris attacks in numerous different ways, including allowing people around the world to get in touch with loved ones and friends and Facebook setting up safety check ins. At the same time, Parisians have been using the hashtag #PorteOuverte (“Open Door”) for those seeking shelter and unable to find anything.

My heart and thoughts goes out to all those impacted by the attacks and I’m also worried about the backlash that will eventually come for the Muslim communities in many countries like France. And it’s important to realize why it’s horrible to blame refugees for the Paris Attacks or even use this against black Americans protesting the very real problem of racism within the US.
